The Publication of the first volume of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945 provides the inspiration for this discussion of the challenges of efforts to assemble research findings and stimulate future scholarly inquiry. Participants assess the importance of such work for 21st century scholarship on the Holocaust.
Encyclopedia editor-in-chief Geoffrey Megargee, Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, talks about the volume, followed by comments from Susanne Heim, Institut fur Zeitgeschichte, Munich, Germany, co-editor and coordinator of the Edition zur Verfolgung und Ermordung der europaischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistische Deutschland (1933-1945). A general discussion follows, including participation by Paul Shapiro, director of the Center, and Hartmut Berghoff, director of the German Historical Institute.
