The Monument of the Grey Buses (Started in 2007)A memorial for the victims of the so-called “Euthanasia-Action” (Aktion T 4) of the National Socialists that claimed more than 300,000 mentally and physically disabled victims during World War II. The mobile seventy ton Monument of the Grey Buses serves as a reminder of the transports of the so-called "patients" to their deaths. The artists Horst Hoheisel and Andreas Knitz designed the monument for the Weißenau Psychiatric Centre near Ravensburg in 2007. A concrete shaped bus in original size as the ones that drove from the hospitals to the death camps in the years 1940 and 1941 blocks the former exit of the Weißenau Clinic The words. “Where are you taking us?” – the question asked by one of the patients - is inscribed on the bus monument. A second, identical Grey Bus has been on the move through Germany stopping at sites where administrative offices of the mass murdered operated from. The mobile Grey Bus Monument has travelled over 5.000 kilometres to 14 sites. It will now leave Kassel on September 8th stopping for a short while in Braunschweig before continuing its journey to Posen /Poznan) in Poland. It will be placed outside the town castle, today home of the ZAMEK Cultural Centre. It will be there as a reminder of the beginning of the industrialised murder with gas of disabled citizens by the National Socialists that began at Fort VII in Poznan in the autumn of 1939. A comprehensive exhibition at the ZAMEK Cultural Centre of the memorial work of Horst Hoheisel and Andreas Knitz will be shown parallel with the presence of the Grey Bus. The exhibition titled: The Eye of Memory will present their Countermonuments, their internationally recognised memorial work on National Socialist crimes as well as crimes committed by Latin American dictatorships. A further work of art especially created for Poznan deals with the swimming pool that the Nazis built into Poznan's former Great Synagogue and that was still being used till 2004. In using broken out pieces of the swimming pool structure the artists will create an installation titled Starting Blocks of Memory in Hitler's former private rooms inside the town castle. Link). Im Programm ist auch das Denkmal der Grauen Busse und die Ausstellung : Das Auge der Erinnerung.Nächste Stationen des Denkmals der Grauen Busse:Ravensburg, Oktober 2014 - Mai 2015, erste Rückkehr an eine Haltestelle, wo der Graue Bus schon 2007 stand.
