The Truth Booth Project – first launched in 2013 at Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum – is an interactive audio/video booth where museum visitors can express their thoughts and feelings on site, and eventually view messages left by others. The project is also an attempt to develop an archive of visitor impressions which, over time, should tell us more about the various ways successive generations connect to Sachsenhausen, significant contemporary issues, and historically traumatic sites. Even though the Sachsenhausen installation is about a specific history, we hope to expand to other memorials.
Gideon Unkeless conceived the idea of having an on-site and interactive visitor feedback station and, with the help of project partner Andreas Matt and a Berlin-based team, implemented the project. During a year-long internship at the Gedenkstätte Sachsenhausen, Gideon gave tours, interviewed survivors, and became aware of the need to discuss not only what happened here, but also what happens to me when I’m here.
