Projektbeschreibung:
This interdisciplinary conference will deal with current tendencies and strategies of the memory of the Holocaust in post-communist East Central Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine and the former East Germany) – from the perspective of historical, literary, art and cultural studies. The conference aims to discuss transformations of discursive procedures and symbolic representations that function as vehicles of memory. These transformations that emerge as a – complex and contradictory – process of regaining of memory (anamnesis) are the focus of our attention...The change of political system in East Central Europe has not only brought about socio-political and economic transformation but also caused deep revisions of historiography and memory politics in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc. In this context the extermination of European Jewry during World War II – which had been either a taboo or a subject of exploitation for an ideological memory politics in the communist era – has increasingly become both an important object of interdisciplinary research and of public debates. These debates have led to often painful and polarizing re-interpretations of historical and cultural self-concepts. This development accompanying the regaining of memory has not come to an end yet, rather the contrary: Today, the linking to a new European memory politics (e.g., the Stockholm Declaration) on the one side and the growing influence of national-conservative and right-wing populist politics in East Central Europe on the other side are important, albeit contrary factors in the dynamics of this field...Looking at East Central European countries, similar developments can be observed – with varying intensity and perspective due to the respective historical situations – that may be considered characteristic for the current way of dealing with the "trauma of European civilisation" (Imre Kertész) in this part of Europe: The return of Holocaust memory is embedded in the process of socio-cultural re-orientation after the democratic turn and thus interwoven with attempts to deal with the past of two totalitarianisms. The merging of different memory narratives intensifies the effects of 'competing victimhoods' and of discursive contradictions. A re-inventing of Jewish culture (e.g., in the case of urban topographies) and modified memory strategies as well as new research initiatives go hand in hand with polarizing debates about cultural and national self-conceptions. Literature, art, film, and theater have reacted to this development and have shaped it as well. Furthermore, research (not only historical but also in the field of literary and cultural studies) focusing on such issues has been increasing since the 1990s. Whereas both commemorative structures and research focusing on the Holocaust not seldom appear as a 'special discourse' or a 'parallel-narrative' to national hegemonic narratives of the past, it is often literature and the arts that function as media of discursive integration, although this integration is not necessarily free of conflict...Taking these observations as a starting point, the conference will address the following questions:..1) Anamnesis and the arts: What has been the role of media events (films, publications, exhibitions, etc.) in the re-emergence of Holocaust memory? To what extent have literary and artistic artifacts acted as vehicles of post-memory and as reservoirs of images and imaginations of the past? Which discursive and iconographic strategies have been chosen in literature and the arts to take hold of the traumatic past and to establish references to today? How have the media procedures, narratives and rhetorical strategies changed? In which way do aesthetic means (such as the poetics of the documentary) shape the tension between the factual and the fictional, between reference and metaphor or symbolization? Which kind of effects (from provocation and subversion to emotional influence and to kitsch and commercialization) can be observed in the artistic and media recourse to the Holocaust?..2) Anamnesis and memory politics: How does Holocaust memory matter within the current re-formulation of the past? To which political constellations (alliances and conflicts) is this memory connected? What is its relevance for re-interpretations of historical (national) self-images? Which discursive strategies have been evolving in public debates and arguments? How has the individual/family/local memory changed? What kind of influence have these changes had on the institutionalized culture of memory as well as on collective imaginations of the past? What has been the function of media, literary and artistic representations in this respect?..Thursday, May 22, 2008..15.00 – 15.20. ..Opening plenary..15.20 – 16.30. ..Film session.. ..Mary – koszmary (Yael Bartana, Israel/Poland, 2008, 12').Urlicht (Diana Groó, Hungary, 2006, 15').Berek (Artur Zmijewski, Poland, 1999, 3'50'').Polak w szafie (Artur Żmijewski, Poland, 2007, ca. 10')..16.30 – 16.45. ..coffee break..16.45 – 17.45. ..Panel 1: Visualizations.. ..György Fehéri (Collegium Hungaricum Berlin):.Du sollst dir (k)ein Bildnis machen!
